Synthetic biology—which combines biology and engineering—will be used to translate ROGUE's Bioenergy and Sustainability discoveries to energycane and Miscanthus. Mechanistic models and standardized genetic engineering will help us quickly determine the best combinations of genes to optimize the process for both crops.

CRISPR-Cas9 (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) is a targeted method of gene editing that enables us to make specific changes to increase the bioenergy production and sustainability of energycane and Miscanthus. Golden Gate technology allows us to create large, multigene constructs that incorporate our breakthroughs into a comprehensive, marketable technology.

Theoretically, ROGUE energycane could produce 32 billion gallons of biodiesel on 57 million acres of marginal land, while ROGUE Miscanthus could produce 86 billion gallons of biodiesel on 178 million acres of land—which is the equivalent of 80 percent of our nation’s diesel.
